Home At Last!

I will confess now that this post will be short, as I am extremely tired. I've discovered that Zach's little noises and verses that fill our house until the wee hours is the music that I fall asleep to. The quiet of our home last night without him was deafening...I got a lousy night's sleep! I am so happy that I will again be able to fall asleep to my little guy's voice, which is a good thing since I have to go back to work tomorrow.

When I arrived at the hospital at about 10 this morning (I had to get the other three off to school, including making the trek to Salem to bring Jacob to kindergarten), Zach was in pretty good spirits. He had been eating, peeing, and stimming as he normally does and appeared less and less frustrated with his casts. He's only asked me three times today to "off shoes", which is a great improvement from yesterday! By noon, his IV had been removed and by 1pm, we were able to get him dressed and ready for OT and PT to visit and teach us how to get him into a wheelchair.

It was exciting to find out that Zach is able to pivot on his feet with us holding him for support and should be able to start trying to put more and more weight on his feet (eventually walking) in the coming week. The hospital ordered him a wheelchair and a walker for school and said that PT at school can get him up and walking as much as he can tolerate. We are also scheduled to meet with his doctor again in three weeks to see if we can trade in his thigh-high casts for knee-high ones...cross your fingers that we can make the swap!!!

Getting Zach home was an interesting task. It's not easy to get a good sized kid up and into a mini van and then into the house, but we all managed to do work together to get it done. I must say, Zach's been a trooper through all of this. The only time that he cried all day was when he got home and realized that his "shoes" were not coming off when he went to bed in his own bed...bummer! The tears were short-lived though and he's now hanging out watching movies. Each of his siblings has spent some time sitting with him, so things are feeling like they are a bit back to normal around here. The doctors say that he should be able to return to school on Monday...we're hoping that becomes a reality!

Oh well, it's off to bed for me! Back to reality tomorrow! Just think, I get to have all this fun and more again in a month with Jacob! I'm tired just thinking about it!
