Becoming More Mobile

It is amazing how good it feels when you are able to come home after an absence and get your life back in order. Last weekend, I was able to clean the house, catch up on laundry, make sure that the kids had projects completed for school and musical instruments had been practiced. I even got to spend some much needed 1:1 time with my girls and got to shop for Jacob's birthday. By the beginning of this work week, I felt like I had climbed a huge mountain, but could finally see the other side. One week later, the chaos is minimal and life is as it should be.

As for an update on the kids:

Jacob is completely off his pain meds and steroids at this point. His incision is healing nicely and, other than some fatigue and stiffness in his neck, he's getting back to his old self. There is still a concern about him falling or hitting his head, so he will need to be very cautious when playing (easier said than done with an active five year old!) and won't be able to go out to recess when he returns to school. Other than that though, life with Jacob is getting back to normal. I was even able to take him to his school to spend about a half hour with his friends and teachers. It was nice to see him able to interact with other kids again after being housebound for so long.

Zachary is going to say goodbye to his wheelchair in the coming week, as he is now able to walk unassisted with his air casts on. He still struggles with bare feet and will need to completely relearn how to walk on flat feet, however he is making amazing progress with the use of his walker. He is getting fitted for leg braces next Friday and will then be able to stop using the air casts and transition to sneakers. He will be using the walker for quite some time and we are hopeful that by his 9th birthday (in May), he'll be walking unassisted again. He still has a long road ahead.

I posted a video below so that you can see how much progress Zachary has made with walking. Enjoy!
